Veteran tactician Carlo Mazzone has revealed that only his age stopped him from applying for the Roma job.
Mazzone, who will be 74 next month, made the claim to Radio Manà Manà this afternoon after Vincenzo Montella replaced Claudio Ranieri in the capital.
"If I was a few years younger then I would have put myself forward to resolve this situation and Coach Roma," he said. "After all, I'm their biggest fan in Italy.

"Montella? I don't think his lack of experience will be a handicap, actually it may turn out to be a blessing."
Mazzone, who was born in the Eternal City, bossed the Giallorossi for three seasons from 1993 and he would have loved a second chance.
"Unfortunately us Coaches always pay the price, that's how the football system works," he continued. "These things happen.
"Claudio is saddened that he resigned, but it was the act of a great man.
"Only I can understand him as we were both born in Rome, we both played and managed Roma, we are great fans of this club…
"He paid for a situation that was bigger than him. I see players concerned about the future of this outfit, it's not allowing them to play with tranquillity."
Mazzone hasn't bossed a team since he took charge of Livorno in 2005-06.
