The Granata had won their opening two games and were favourites to maintain that perfect record, only to suffer a shock 2-1 home defeat to Lecce on Monday night.

Samp are in considerably worse condition, having lost all three encounters so far this season.

“At times, results do not reflect the performances. Sampdoria played very well against Napoli and were unlucky to lose 2-0,” said Mazzarri in his Press conference.

“They have strong players who are still trying to get accustomed to a completely different method from their new Coach. It’s a dangerous match for us.

“For many reasons, we’ve had to make a lot of changes in defence. Koffi Djidji needed surgery and then rushed back his return, Lyanco was hurt twice, others returned late from international duty this summer and you know the Nicolas Nkoulou situation (tried to force a move to Roma).

“If we’d been in an emergency situation, I would’ve included Nkoulou in the side, but he trained separately for 23 days and with us for five, so cannot be in good shape right now. If he does what I hope he does, then I can call him up against Milan.

“I’d be horribly let down if I saw the same performance as against Lecce. It was the same XI that beat Parma so well only 16 days earlier, so clearly something went wrong. We all have to take responsibility and tomorrow I want to see the aggression that has always been our hallmark over our time together.

“There was nothing positive about our performance against Lecce. It was our worst match since I arrived at Torino. I didn’t like the approach, the mentality. The players are well aware they didn’t play the way they usually do and I hope to see a very different Torino this weekend.”
