New signing Matheus Henrique explains why he chose Sassuolo, noting the transfer from Gremio has been in the works ‘for almost two years.’

The 23-year-old midfielder had his medical today and must now fly back to Brazil to complete some paperwork before his return to Italy.

“I am very happy to be here in Italy with a club like Sassuolo,” Matheus Henrique told Sky Sport Italia.

“I chose this club because the project had been in the works for almost two years and I thank God it finally happened, I am very happy. Forza Sassuolo.”

He is arriving as part of a double deal with Gremio worth a total €16-17m, although his teammate Ruan will remain on loan in Brazil until January 2022.

It is widely reported that Matheus Henrique is seen by Sassuolo as the natural heir to Manuel Locatelli, who is still in talks for a move to Juventus this summer.

More meetings are planned tomorrow and Juve are confident they will get the deal done for the Italy international midfielder, probably on loan with option to buy.
