Rafa Marquez has described Serie A as one of the best leagues in the world and encouraged more Mexicans to follow his lead.

The defender joined Verona during the summer and has quickly become an integral part of the team.

Whilst this week being inaugurated into Mexico's footballing Hall of Fame, the former Barcelona stopper reflected on the competitive edge of Italian football.

“Serie A is one of the best Leagues in the world and can definitely be a very important market for us Mexicans,” Marquez has commented.

“I'm an important player for my team. I've been given the captain's armband, but I have to keep working hard to maintain a high level [of performance].”

Marquez's move to Verona came as a surprise, as he appeared to be winding down his career with spells at New York Red Bulls and Leon in his native country.

However, the 35-year-old insists he still has plenty to offer on the pitch.

“I thought South Africa would be my last World Cup, and that going to play in New York would be another step in that direction [towards retirement],” he added.

“But I was wrong. My body is still in good condition and I feel good in Italy. We'll see what happens between now and the World Cup in Russia.”
