Sergio Pellissier had put the Flying Donkeys in front at San Siro until a late flurry of goals from Mauro Icardi, Ivan Perisic and Eder turned it around for the 3-1 result.

“There is work to do, it’s a difficult moment for us. This feels like a very different defeat to the one against Atalanta, as I saw the right spirit and attitude from the team,” he told Mediaset Premium and Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s a pity, because we could’ve done better. We were up against a very strong Inter side, who have been totally transformed from the team we beat in August.”

Chievo lost to Fiorentina with a last-gasp penalty in the Coppa Italia Round of 16 on Wednesday night.

“Unfortunately we lost intensity towards the end, perhaps because we played midweek in the Coppa Italia, and that meant some of the substitutions were forced upon me.

“We went too deep and couldn’t press Inter as much, which we had done very well in the first half. It was our third game in six days and we were short due to injuries, so several players had to feature in all of them.

“I thought we should’ve had more possession and lately we’re struggling with that. If you don’t have the ball, you have to chase the opposition and in the long run that’s a strain."

Nonetheless, 37-year-old Pellissier scored a wonderful volley from a corner to give Chievo the lead.

“Pellissier amazes us every week. He works so hard every week, but also has a nose for goal and you can’t teach that, it’s in the blood. He is able to get away from the marker and know where the ball is going to fall.”
