Rolando Maran admits Cagliari “conceded far too cheaply and it becomes impossible to make up for those mistakes” after a 4-3 defeat to Roma.

The Sardinians had gone in front through Joao Pedro, then tried to claw their way back from 3-1 down to 4-2, eventually losing 4-3.

“Believing until the end was not enough, we should’ve been more robust during the 90 minutes. We scored three goals, but conceded far too cheaply,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Believing until the end was not enough, we should’ve been more robust during the 90 minutes. We scored three goals, but conceded far too cheaply,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“The lads are trying to do their best, but there is anxiety in defensive situations and if you do that against a side like Roma, it becomes impossible to make up for these mistakes.

“We need to rediscover that confidence. We are gifting goals at the moment and that is really disappointing, because the team tries to do what we planned and then in certain moments just loses the focus you need in Serie A.

“I saw most of the Roma goals came from situations where we had the ball and were trying to force our way through, made a mistake and were caught on the turnover.”

Cagliari are now without a victory in 11 Serie A rounds, since the 4-3 win over Sampdoria on December 2.

“All we can do now is express our disappointment to the fans, the club, the President. The fact we fought so hard to the end and showed real heart was the only positive. Performances only count for so much, we can’t hide from these statistics and can only apologise.”
