The Giallorossi wasted some truly extraordinary opportunities to take the lead against Real Madrid, but ultimately paid for howlers at both ends of the pitch.

“I can’t even say it was their first chance, as it was an unlucky ricochet and they scored a goal. We wasted three or four clear chances, we didn’t take the lead and they were clinical,” the Greek defender told Sky Sport Italia.

“After that, we fell away, it’s true, and they took control of the game. We are a young team, we need patience and have to earn a lot of experience.

“We were superior to Real Madrid in the first half, a side that won the Champions League three years in a row, but if you are superior and don’t take your chances, you are going to lose.”

Manolas was asked about his future and committed himself to the Stadio Olimpico side.

“I’ve always said I renewed my contract with Roma and am happy here. I have no interest in the transfer market. We are young, we are growing together and I think we need to build on the first half performance.”
