Mancini was appointed this week and will begin his Nazionale tenure by naming a 25-man squad this afternoon.

He is expected to include Nice striker Balotelli, who hasn’t played for his country since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but worked with Mancio at Inter and Manchester City.

It is the start of a generational shift, with the likes of Atalanta midfielder Cristante, potentially Cagliari’s Nicolò Barella, Juventus winger Federico Bernardeschi and Fiorentina star Federico Chiesa.

Others who could bolster the ranks are from smaller clubs, but made a big impact in Serie A this season, such as Sassuolo forward Politano and Bologna free kick specialist Simone Verdi.
