Roberto Mancini insists Inter have “a good foundation” but have to strengthen certain areas.

The Nerazzurri missed out on Champions League qualification this season, but the Coach doesn’t think that makes the campaign a write-off.

“The Champions League would have been important for our club,” Mancini acknowledged in his pre-Empoli Press conference.

“But it doesn’t mean that with this tournament [Europa League] we have to tear everything up. The difference isn’t that big [to Roma] we just have to improve like we did this season.

“We finished the transfer campaign with a surplus, we weren’t passive. We did our best with our means and the team is good.

“The team has a good foundation and some fixed points as opposed to last year. We have to strengthen where we’re lacking a little, but that also depends on the market.

“The current team has a good foundation, those who come in will have to be ready, for big games too.

“Funds for the transfer market? The President [Erick Thohir] will tell me, then we’ll see how we operate.”

Could some of the bigger names in the squad be sold to fund new purchases?

“I don’t know, none of us had thought about selling [Mateo] Kovacic, Hernanes, [Fredy] Guarin and [Xherdan] Shaqiri, but those sales happened for certain reasons.

“Sometimes these kind of transfers are necessary. It will depend on the club, but I think we can keep them [the big names].”

Both Milan clubs will be out of the Champions League for the third season in a row, and the Coach was asked for his opinion.

“It’s a hard period after winning a lot both in Italy and in Europe,” Mancini explained.

“That wasn’t a long time ago. These two clubs have made history, now they’re going through a tough time, like all of Italian football. It takes patience.

“A message to the fans? We want to get back to winning. We’ll try to make them happy by getting back into the Champions League.”
