Gianluca Mancini had “no doubts” when Roma came calling and can see similarities between Paulo Fonseca and Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini.

The centre-back made the move from Atalanta this week on loan with obligation to buy for a total €15m, plus up to a maximum of €8m in bonuses.

“I am fully aware that I’m still young and have a lot to learn, but I’m happy to be here and to improve at Roma,” said the 23-year-old in his Press conference.

“I am fully aware that I’m still young and have a lot to learn, but I’m happy to be here and to improve at Roma,” said the 23-year-old in his Press conference.

“I know the areas I most need to work on are pace and also zonal marking, seeing as I am accustomed to man-marking.”

He is effectively the replacement for Napoli-bound Kostas Manolas, chosen by new Coach Fonseca.

“The Coach talked to me about the tactical situations we want to develop, such as keeping a high defensive line, pressing hard and playing out from the back. He tells us not to be afraid, to keep the line high even when under pressure.

“I like that Fonseca is not afraid to play out from defence and focus on very aggressive football, as I appreciate that approach. I might struggle initially when moving from a three-man defence to four, but I already played 4-3-3 for Italy.

“I do see some similarities between Fonseca and Gasperini, particularly when it comes to intensity and the physical effort they require from their players.

“I had some wonderful years with Atalanta, but when Roma contacted me, I had no doubts. I am proud to wear this jersey. There was some talk in January about Roma, but nothing concrete.”
