The Moroccan centre-back has been with one foot out of the door all summer following a contract dispute, but a €35m move to Manchester City collapsed at the last minute.

Chelsea had been the latest hot favourites to sign him, but today Sky Sports and CNN claimed Manchester United were on the verge of completing the deal.

Italian media point out the current situation is playing perfectly into Roma’s hands, as they can spark a bidding war between some of Europe’s biggest spenders.

Manchester United made it clear they desperately need reinforcements at the back after today’s shock 2-1 home defeat to Swansea City in the Premier League.

Bayern Munich Coach Pep Guardiola also confirmed their requirements, as Javi Martinez is out for seven months with a cruciate ligament injury.

Add Chelsea to the mix and Roma have a bona fide bidding war, so Benatia’s €30m asking price is rising rapidly.

The 27-year-old had a strong debut season with the Giallorossi, scoring five Serie A goals in 33 games as well as proving solid at the back.
