Paolo Maldini insists he ‘absolutely’ does not regret not returning to Milan after their Chinese takeover last year.

Maldini was a one-club man, spending his entire playing career with Milan, but the legendary defender nonetheless passed up Li Yonghong’s offer of a place on his newly-formed board.

“They must believe in fourth place. If they played the derby and beat Inter, they would’ve moved to within four points of it,” he told Premium Sport.

“They must believe in fourth place. If they played the derby and beat Inter, they would’ve moved to within four points of it,” he told Premium Sport.

“Of course, there’s also Roma and Lazio, but believing in it is necessary: they can’t make any more mistakes after such a difficult start to the season.

“Arsenal have been playing very badly lately, but you face top players in Europe. Form doesn’t come into it.

“Regrets about not returning to Milan? Absolutely not. My decisions were made after making long considerations.

“I’m convinced about the decision I made. Returning to football at 50 years of age? I love this sport and environment, but it’s not been said that I will.

“I haven’t done so for the last nine years, but we’ll see what the future holds.”
