Milan legend Paolo Maldini promises “no crazy spending”, and wants to leave disputes with the ultras in the past.
The former defender played over 900 games for the Rossoneri during his playing career, and will now work alongside technical director Leonardo.
At his Press conference today, the former Italy international was asked what he makes of the current squad.
“The results are clear, we’ve finished sixth two years in a row. We certainly need to improve the team,” Maldini said.

“The results are clear, we’ve finished sixth two years in a row. We certainly need to improve the team,” Maldini said.
“I’ve only just joined, but we’ve been talking on the phone and in the coming days we’ll know more about the market.
“The first objective is to stay within the FFP parameters, so there will be no crazy spending.
“I only joined the club today, so there will be time to talk about transfer strategy. The owners want to keep hold of the club for a medium to long term, which is part of the reason I accepted a return.
“My history means I must accept jobs that aren’t just short-term. I’ve spoken to [Coach Gennaro] Gattuso, we’ll meet up soon.”
Maldini’s final game was marred by insults from the ultras, and he was asked whether he’s worried about the reception he’ll get.
“My relationship with the fans is fantastic. The fans love me and have always shown it, that incident can stay where it was left.
“I don’t think there’s anything that has to be repaired. I think I’ll be judged on my work, as I was as a player.
“I don’t expect anything, I never expected banners as a player and I certainly don’t now as a director.”
As arguably Italy’s greatest ever defensive product, Maldini was asked if he sees Alessio Romagnoli and Mattia Caldara as the future of the Diavolo backline.
“Absolutely, alongside [Juventus’ Daniele] Rugani they’re the two most promising defenders.
“[Gonzalo] Higuain was a great signing and Caldara is a young lad with great potential. If you were to ask any expert who would be good for the national team, they’d certainly say Caldara.
“Also [Patrick] Cutrone did incredible things last year, I followed him when my sons were in the youth teams. He has real desire.”
