Paolo Maldini believes he can help Milan’s young defensive line with his experience but assures they are ‘old enough to get the best out of themselves’.

Milan’s rear guard of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Alessio Romagnoli, Mattia Caldara and Davide Calabria have been hailed as Italy’s future, and Maldini suggested there were parallels between them and the Rossoneri’s all-conquering back line of the 1980s and 1990s.

“What I can do is talk with the lads and Coach,” continued the clubs newly-appointed strategic development director at a Press conference.

“Still, we’re talking about lads who are old enough to get the best out of themselves. We’re happy with the defence and team.

“You don't know Gattuso, he’s never calm, he doesn't know what it is to be calm. He’s worse now than when he left for the US!

“Him being reconfirmed as our Coach has never been in question. He transmits the club’s values. When we meet, we’ll hear his requests.

“I was lucky enough to play for Milan with Tassotti, Baresi, Costacurta and Filippo Galli. We had the best defensive line in Italy. Today’s group know what it means to stay at Milan. They can do well.

“Donnarumma’s someone who’s had so much pressure on his shoulders in the last two years and he’s held up well. The idea is to help him.

“I think we can always improve. Milan have done things well because they brought through so many young players. Who leads them will be decided in the next few days.

“What I did on the pitch didn’t necessarily lead me towards becoming a director. I always took things in a very simple and rather laidback way.”
