Paolo Maldini insists his fierce criticism of the Milan hierarchy is “out of love” and trusts Sinisa Mihajlovic to help them.
The club legend had been expected to follow in the footsteps of Javier Zanetti at Inter and Pavel Nedved for Juventus by joining the Board after retirement, but instead has been notable by his absence.
“It’s true that I was born and raised at Milan, but the most important thing I achieved in my life was independent thought,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s true that I was born and raised at Milan, but the most important thing I achieved in my life was independent thought,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
“I know full well that it’s much easier to tell people you care about that everything is wonderful, but it’s much more useful to explain things the way they really are.
“My position of criticising Milan is purely out of love, because I still do love this club very much. If I can give something back to a club that gave me so much, I am happy to do so.
“However, I want to make my own decisions and this is apparently something that is complicated or could cause trouble. President Silvio Berlusconi made other choices.”
Maldini had also said CEO Adriano Galliani “is lacking in his knowledge of football” and needed help to evaluate players.
The former defender does have some kind words for current Coach Mihajlovic.
“It’s not easy to arrive at a club like Milan, with such a glorious past, and see all those trophies in the museum, the aura of San Siro. That weighs on players, Coaches, everyone.
“I did not agree with the idea of bringing in debutant Coaches over recent years, as it’s a huge gamble, even if Clarence Seedorf effectively had some incredible results.
“Milan need someone who can shake things up and Mihajlovic is that man.”
