CONI President Giovanni Malagò has again criticised the world of football for their reaction to the coronavirus pandemic. “They never considered an alternative to resuming.”

The latest Italian Government decree on the shutdown expires on May 3, so plans are in place to start training from May 4, with games potentially from May 27.

“Football does not consider things the same way as the other sports,” Malagò told Il Secolo XIX newspaper.

He is the President of the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) and therefore co-ordinates all professional sports in the country.

“I am the first to recognise that football has a certain specificity and has the right or even duty to seek every avenue for completing the season, but they never considered an alternative to resuming their games.

“For example, one of the biggest volleyball clubs said they were prepared to let their star player go because they could no longer afford his salary. Instead of focusing on the league or cup competitions, football clubs ought to think about securing their future.

“The real problem of this pandemic is not what happens today, but tomorrow.”

Some have suggested assigning the Scudetto to current leaders Juventus, others to simply not give the Serie A title to anyone, as a gesture that everyone is in it together.

“It’s clear that a signal must be sent and that is a sentiment that is shared widely among the people.”
