Spezia are already in turmoil, as Giulio Maggiore – who has been linked with a move away – refused to play today’s Coppa Italia tie against Como unless his captain’s armband was restored.

Their official season kicks off this evening with the first round of the Coppa Italia against Como, the Serie B side who just signed Cesc Fabregas.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Maggiore was meant to start today, but he refused when told by new coach Luca Gotti that he would not be the captain.

In retaliation, Maggiore was sent to the stands, with the armband going to Emanuel Gyasi instead.

He is also likely to be fined by the Serie A club, while it only makes it more probable he will be sold this summer, with Torino the favourites ahead of Sassuolo, Bologna and Fiorentina.

Maggiore was born and bred in La Spezia, wearing the armband throughout last season, but his decision not to sign a new contract saw him removed from the role.
