Despite strong links with Fiorentina, Massimo Maccarone says he is on the verge of signing for Sampdoria.

The striker has been transfer listed by Palermo this month and it was thought that the Viola were ready to pounce.

However, Maccarone has this afternoon admitted that he will be heading to Marassi after Doria made their offer.

"I'm flying out to Genoa," the former Italian Under-21 international noted. "The move is not yet official, but it will be when I sign the contract."

Samp do need a striker after selling Antonio Cassano to Milan and Guido Marilungo to Serie B outfit Atalanta.

Although Federico Macheda has been brought in on loan from Man Utd, they do have a striker crisis.

Giampaolo Pazzini and Nicola Pozzi both limped out of the 0-0 draw with Juventus yesterday and will be sidelined for around 15 days.
