Hopes of seeing Romelu Lukaku back in Serie A suffered a blow today, as he scored twice for Chelsea, becoming their most prolific player this season.

The Belgium international asked to leave Inter last summer after taking them to the Serie A title under the guidance of Antonio Conte.

He struggled to justify the €113m price-tag and managed to infuriate both Chelsea and Inter fans in January when revealing how much he missed the San Siro crowd and their warmth, hoping to return one day.

That would inevitably have to be on loan, although Inter aren’t the only Serie A side showing an interest in bringing Lukaku back, as their rivals Milan have also been linked, as well as Barcelona in La Liga.

He was given a rare start today against Wolverhampton Wanderers and found the net twice in the space of a couple of minutes, earning and converting a penalty before adding a second strike.

It ended 2-2 with Wolves equalising deep into stoppages.

Despite getting very little playing time under Thomas Tuchel, Lukaku is still the most prolific player in the Chelsea squad this season with 14 goals in 41 games.

These were his first Premier League goals of 2022, but Tuchel was in no mood to praise his centre-forward.

“Good performance, but for sure not the moment to talk about individual performances. We lost points.”
