Former Inter boss Mircea Lucescu insists he ‘knew’ Luciano Spalletti would do a good job in charge of the Nerazzurri.

Ex-Roma Coach Spalletti was appointed at the San Siro over the summer and has led the Nerazzurri on an 11-match unbeaten run to start the Serie A season.

“I knew that Spalletti would do well,” Lucescu, who coached Inter between 1998 and 1999, told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I knew that Spalletti would do well,” Lucescu, who coached Inter between 1998 and 1999, told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He is someone who follows his own path and does not deviate.

“He knows how to transmit confidence to his players and he knows how to make people listen to him.”

Lucescu, who was in charge of Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk for 12 years, spoke about how he regularly faced Spalletti’s then-Zenit St Petersburg team during that time.

“We faced each other many times when he was at Zenit.

“During the Russian and Ukrainian winter breaks there were only two or three good teams to play friendlies against. Them and CSKA.

“We invented a tournament so we could play competitive friendlies. Luciano had a great team. I made him angry when I won!”

The now-Turkey national team Coach was asked whether he thinks Napoli are now more equipped to challenge Juventus for the Scudetto than they were last season.

“Not so much. Napoli play very well, but that isn’t enough. Juve are still more organised.

“In recent years, Napoli in Europe have been a disaster.”
