Parma captain Alessandro Lucarelli says he’ll retire if he can’t stay with the club beyond this season.

The Ducali have been declared bankrupt, and are being funded by the Lega Serie A until the end of the season.

FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio has stated that he believes the club will be sold, and if any potential new buyer pays the club’s €74m sporting debt they can begin again in Serie B next season.

“We hope that someone will buy Parma,” Lucarelli said in a Press conference at Collecchio today.

“We want to make it attractive, and everyone has to do their part. Ourselves on the pitch, as well as the fans who need to fill the stands to show they’re close to the team.

“Tavecchio doesn’t have to find a buyer for Parma, [but] I don’t see why he should lie. He’s put his name forward to act as an intermediary.

“Will I stay? Either I finish my career at Parma or I’ll stop. I’m willing to make myself important for this club, both contractually and sportingly.

“Myself and my teammates are available to make further sacrifices.”

The situation at Parma has led to sweeping reforms of ownership rules in Italy, and Lucarelli has hailed this as a positive step.

“Finally we’re getting back to normal, even if it’s in small steps. On Thursday there was the meeting of the Federal Council, and there’s a lot of pride and satisfaction to be able to achieve these standards to protect clubs and players in the future.

“There’s a lot of happiness because we were able to improve the system, not just for Parma, although we suffered because of loopholes in the regulations.

“Balanced budgets are in the interest of sitting Presidents and those who are yet to come. We’re heading toward a major change in the football system which should make everyone happy, not just Parma or Lucarelli, even though it will take months.

“This doesn’t just happen in football, it’s a problem with the Italian mentality, we always come to things late.

“It’s unthinkable that a person can wake up in the morning, buy a football club, have fun say ‘see you around’ and then leave.

“We can’t afford a lack of bureaucratic regulations.”
