President Claudio Lotito asks “why is it madness?” to think Lazio can win the Scudetto.

The Biancocelesti finished fifth last season and reaching the Coppa Italia final, and they got this campaign off to a flyer with Sunday night’s 3-2 win over Juventus in  the Supercoppa Italiana.

“Is it madness to think we can win the Scudetto?” Lotito considered, speaking to Corriere della Sera.

“Why is it madness? We don’t limit ourselves to divine provenance. It happened with Leicester City in the Premier League, right?

“Our philosophy is clear, take it one step at a time without ever taking too long a step. Because we want to win, but without taking shortcuts.

“It’s not true that we’ve let players leave to make money, [Lucas] Biglia, for example, asked to leave. We had a plan though, and we already had Lucas Leiva ready to replace him.

“It’s the same for [Felipe] Caicedo, we did that in advance to ensure that if anyone left we wouldn’t have any problems. I rejected €70m for [Sergej] Milinkovic-Savic.

“We’re a serious club and we’ve shown the international appeal that we enjoy. We can’t compete with the top seven or eight clubs in Europe, but we keep working and we pay our wages with punctuality.

“The players know that.”

Lotito was then asked what he feels the Supercoppa victory represents.

“It means then when there are capable and serious people, and a club with sound principles, great results can be achieved.

“Was it sweeter to beat Juventus? Political differences don’t affect personal relationships, and indeed [President Andrea] Agnelli and [general manger Beppe] Marotta came over to me after the game and congratulated me.

“Andrea admitted that Lazio deserved to win and [Coach Max] Allegri said that publicly, their words are a credit to both.”
