Diego Lopez says the “main goal” for Milan is to qualify for Europe this season.

The Spanish goalkeeper is currently out injured as he recovers from patellar tendonitis, but discussed the aims for the campaign with Marca.

“The goal is to play in Europe,” Lopez explained.

“We need to have that aggressiveness and put it out on the park. The players who have come in and those who stayed are good enough to play in Europe and maybe the Champions League.

“We need to have that aggressiveness and put it out on the park. The players who have come in and those who stayed are good enough to play in Europe and maybe the Champions League.

“That’s actually the main goal this season. The last two seasons have gone wrong, but we have to be patient because we certainly have one of the best squads in Italy.

“Will I leave in January? No, at the moment I’m only thinking about fully recovering from this injury to return to playing in this shirt as soon as possible.”

Lopez was also asked about the difference between Italian and Spanish football.

“It depends on the team you play. I play in a very attacking team, more like one of the big teams in Spain. Other Italian teams watch their backs, and the football is slower in general.

“I try to get better in every aspect, with every passing year I try to improve a little.”

Finally, the former Real Madrid goalkeeper dismissed suggestions that the modern goalkeeper has to be good with his feet as well as his hands.

“I disagree,” Lopez contended.

“I grew up with [Francisco] Buyo, [Edwin] Van Der Sar, [Bodo] Illgner… those were my childhood idols. A goalkeeper must make saves.

“It seems that if you’re not good with your feet you’re not a good goalkeeper. There are some ‘keepers who play well with their feet but less well in the goal.”
