David Lopez says he is keen to prove those who doubt his credentials wrong, in his actions on the pitch for Napoli.

After a summer that saw the likes of Javier Mascherano, Mario Suarez, Maxime Gonalons and Marouane Fellaini linked with the Vesuviani, the arrival of Lopez from Espanyol drew with it some criticism from supporters.

For the player himself, though, in being officially presented today, it’s not something to get hung up on.

“There were not only negative messages, but also some of welcome,” Lopez has first countered to reporters today.

“The fact that negative things have been written about me does not get me down. People do not know me and I will try to change their mind on the field.

“For me it will be a great challenge, this team last year won the Coppa Italia and did well in the League and in the Champions League.

“I have come here to learn and to develop under a great Coach and I do not set myself any limits.

“Benitez called me before my signing and asked of me very specific things. I did not think twice about it and have come here.

“My inspirations? Sergio Busquets and Xabi Alonso, for playing in my position. Above all, though, in this squad they are all very good players in the midfield.

“Am I ready right now? No doubt I am ready to play every three days, I feel good physically. I have already played with my former team this season, I have no problem.”

The 24-year-old was asked about fitting into Rafa Benitez’s tactics.

“Even before talking with Benitez I knew how this team plays. I do not have preferences with respect to the different roles in the middle of the park.

“Last year I played in a 4-2-3-1 and I adapted to this role, but I am also open to change.

“I know that this will be a pivotal year for Napoli – there a big objectives and I am here to provide my contribution.

“I know it is a difficult moment because of the Champions League and that there is great pressure, but now we look forward.

“We must put [the elimination] in the past. I know that this stadium pushes the team forward a lot, I have been told this. Now, I will find out in person.”
