Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore says the club should make a “megabucks” offer for Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon.

The veteran is out of contract at the end of the season, and has still not announced whether or not he’ll retire.

While the legendary goalkeeper has made it clear it’s Juve or nothing, the former England striker says he should move to Anfield.

“What Liverpool need now is a top quality goalkeeper,” Collymore said at an event for BetStars.

“When people say what type of goalkeeper, whether young or old, I would say go for one with experience.

“A player like Petr Cech or Joe Hart, who has won the Premier League, can bring that experience into the dressing room.

“Gigi Buffon is talking about retiring at the end of the season. Why not go and make him a megabucks offer?

“An incredible presence, an incredible footballing icon, to walk into another great football club from Juventus and say right I’m going to have two years here, I’m going to help bring through the next goalkeeping prodigy at Liverpool, and I’m going to help them win the title, what a fitting end to a great career that would be.”

In addition to the fact Buffon has made it clear he’d only play on for Juventus, a move to Liverpool would be difficult politically.

Many Bianconeri fans still hold an enmity for the Reds after the Heysel Stadium disaster, and another club legend, Alessandro Del Piero, turned down a move to Anfield for that reason.

“Juve and Liverpool have worked hard to mend their relationship, but for a lot of people it's something that can never be forgotten,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport in 2012.

“I wasn't interested in money. I've won everything there is to win so another Champions League campaign would have done nothing for me.”
