Milan fans must have breathed a sigh of relief watching Leao overcome Guillermo Ochoa to put the ball into an empty net during Milan’s 2-1 win at Salernitana.

The dynamics of the goal suggested nothing had changed since the Portuguese’s last appearance in the Rossoneri shirt against Fiorentina, when he had also found an early opener to pave for another 2-1 win back in November.

His skills, sprint and smile were all still there, and so was his composure in front of the goal. Something else, though, remained unchanged – Leao’s contract is still expiring in June 2024, increasing fear of a potential departure, with several Premier League clubs reportedly monitoring the situation of the Portuguese star.

Yet, Leao’s display against Salernitana itself could be a clear hint of the future that awaits him. In fact, he showcased a brilliant attitude, proving how strong his commitment to his side is.

Not only he broke the deadlock and created several chances for his side, but he was constantly involved in the ball recovery and careful not to leave too much space behind him to meet all of his manager’s demands.

Further confirmations came from the words of Leao’s coach and teammate Sandro Tonali, who both reiterated the player’s will to stay at the San Siro.

“I spoke with him and I told him that his growth process with us isn’t over yet. I see him happy and willing to stay here”, Pioli said.

According to Tonali, Leao’s heartfelt celebration in front of the goal was a further proof of his desire.

“He’s always been at the heart of our project. He’s a Milan player, he knows it and he wants to stay with us, you could see it today”, Tonali told Dazn.
