The punishment for audible and consistent racist abuse from Lazio fans against Milan is the partial stadium closure for one game – as a suspended sentence.

The clear and blatant racist chants coming from a specific section of the travelling supporters was heard throughout the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final last week.

After an investigation, the Lega Serie A announced this evening that the only punishment handed down would be the closure of the Curva Nord of the Stadio Olimpico, where the hardline ultras sit, for one match.

After an investigation, the Lega Serie A announced this evening that the only punishment handed down would be the closure of the Curva Nord of the Stadio Olimpico, where the hardline ultras sit, for one match.

However, as Lazio were not already on a warning, it is a suspended sentence.

That means no action will be taken at all unless Lazio break the rules again over the next 12 months.

The statement from the Disciplinary Committee points out that “almost the total capacity of the travelling fans in the Terzo Anello Verde section, 90% of the 4,049 occupants, were responsible for repeated racist chants towards Milan players Franck Kessie and, in particular, Tiemoue Bakayoko.”

There is also film of Lazio fans singing a racist chant about Bakayoko before, during and after the game.

In the same statement, the disciplinary commission fined Atalanta €7,000 for their fans throwing a firework on to the pitch.
