Roma’s elimination from the Europa League means that Lazio have officially qualified for the 2020-21 Champions League.

There had still been a slim chance that fourth place in Serie A would not be enough to guarantee a spot in the tournament.

That is because UEFA have a limit of at most five clubs from the same country participating in the Champions League.

If Roma had won the Europa League and Napoli also won the Champions League, that would mean five teams gained a place in next season’s main tournament.

If Roma had won the Europa League and Napoli also won the Champions League, that would mean five teams gained a place in next season’s main tournament.

As a result, fourth place in Serie A would have become valid only for a Europa League spot.

However, the Giallorossi were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Sevilla this evening, so Lazio can officially celebrate their qualification for the Champions League in 2020-21.

They enter along with Juventus, Inter, Atalanta and potentially Napoli.
