The staff at the Stadio Olimpico have placed large plastic sheets across the turf since yesterday and worked to ensure the drains were clear.

However, the situation is deteriorating fast this morning and there are several roads flooded in Rome, while some areas are without electricity.

There is an Orange Alert in Rome and ultimately it will be down to the local council. A decision is expected at circa 11.00 UK time (10.00 GMT).

Udine has also been hit by heavy storms and the worst of it is expected this afternoon.

The worst of the weather this morning has been in Livorno, where flash floods left six people dead and another three are missing.
