Lazio are lining up Gennaro Gattuso after a disappointing start to the season with Simone Inzaghi, claims Il Messaggero newspaper.

The Aquile won the Coppa Italia in May, beating Atalanta 2-0 in the Final, and had opened their Serie A campaign with a 3-0 victory away to Sampdoria.

However, their form has been sliding ever since, with a draw against Roma, then fumbling leads to lose 2-1 at both SPAL and Europa League opponents CFR Cluj.

With four points from the opening three rounds, it is Lazio’s worst start to a Serie A season under Inzaghi since he took over in 2016.

According to Il Messaggero newspaper, the downturn has been enough to prompt radical action from President Claudio Lotito by contacting Gattuso.

The former Milan boss had already been linked with Lazio earlier in the summer, when it had looked as if Inzaghi was pushing for the exit.

Gattuso is currently out of work, but has been spotted attending various games around the country.
