Jurgen Klopp ‘could not be more proud’ of Liverpool after making Champions League history with a 2-1 win away to Milan.

The Reds had already qualified for the Round of 16, but became the first English club to win all six matches in their Champions League group stage.

“Very proud. Especially because of the sixth game to be honest,” Klopp told BT Sport.

Champions League | Milan 1-2 Liverpool: Tomori not enough

Just like at Anfield, Milan had taken the lead with Fikayo Tomori, but defensive errors and much quicker reactions on rebounds from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi turned it around.

“We chose that line-up because we wanted to win the game. We needed fresh legs. We needed desire to play this game which is difficult in this hectic schedule to always be on fire for the next game.

“What the boys did tonight I could not be more proud. It was an incredible game. I am so happy. The performance was outstanding.

“Having 21 shots, so many situations where we played outstandingly well and defended passionately and well organised.”

This match was irrelevant for Liverpool, but their determination was evident at San Siro.

“Alisson wanted to play desperately so that speaks a lot for him. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were exceptional and how much they help defensively was outstanding. This mix of fresh legs and then quality as well was really good.”
