Roma have made Wolfsburg centre-back Simon Kjaer their No 1 choice to replace Philippe Mexes this summer, according to Il Corriere della Sera.

Last week, Mexes revealed that he is leaving Roma after seven years and the expectation is that he will join Milan once the season ends despite a serious knee injury.

Roma have drawn up a shortlist of possible replacements, which include Benfica's Luisao and Fenerbahce's Diego Lugano.

However, Kjaer is in pole position, not least because at 22 he is still young, but more importantly he has knowledge of Serie A.

The Denmark international was a revelation in two seasons with Palermo and appeared destined to become one of the League's top defenders.

He has started 27 games for Wolfsburg in the current campaign, but his time at the club hasn't been easy.

Wolfsburg are on their third manager this season and with five games remaining lie third from bottom.

Even if Die Wolfe were to keep their top flight status, it seems Kjaer would become available.
