Juventus director Gianluca Pessotto says that competition in Europe has increased, but the Bianconeri played at the same level as Atletico Madrid.

Juve earned a draw against the Spanish yesterday evening to ensure qualification for the Last 16 in the Champions League.

“Juve were at the level of Atletico, and played the game to try to take first place in the group,” former defender Pessotto has enthused in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

“In the second half, against an opponent of this calibre, it was better to limit ourselves to calculated risks.

“It was important to pass the ball. The first micro-objective was met, so we're happy.”

The Juventus director won the Champions League as a player in 1996, but he prefers not to compare his old team with the current one.

“I don't like making comparisons. We are talking about different ages.

“Today's Juventus has grown a lot, she is back to winning in Italy and is looking for a stable dimension in Europe.

“Compared to my time the European teams are stronger, there is greater competition.

“The President, the Coach and the players want to stay in Europe permanently. It's part of a process of growth.

“With today's result we are aiming for one of the top eight places in Europe.”
