English papers claim Juventus are the favourites to sign David Luiz if the Brazilian leaves Chelsea in January, replacing Benedikt Howedes.

The versatile 30-year-old can play in defence or midfield, which would suit the regular tactical tinkering of Coach Max Allegri.

David Luiz had a row with Antonio Conte after the 3-0 Champions League loss to Roma in October and has played only once since then.

He has been suffering from a knee injury, but Conte hinted he’d prefer Andreas Christensen even once Luiz found fitness.

“Christensen is the present and the future for Chelsea.”

According to the Mirror on Sunday, Juventus are the most likely destination for David Luiz, rated at £23m (approximately €28m), but Manchester United are another alternative after Eric Bailly’s ankle injury.

It’s possible Juve could use the money that had been set aside to buy Howedes (€3.5m for the loan and €13m option to buy plus €3m bonuses) and invest it in David Luiz instead.

Howedes has made only one appearance since arriving on loan from Schalke 04 and is out until at least the New Year with another muscular problem.

It’s increasingly obvious that Juve won’t activate their option to buy and could even send Howedes back to Germany in January.
