Claudio Marchisio insists Juventus “respect” Leonardo Bonucci’s decision to join Milan and that he “always knew” his injury recovery would take a year.

Marchisio damaged knee ligaments at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, which curtailed his impact last season, but the midfielder is primed for a key role in 17-18 after a successful International Champions Cup.

“I always knew that it would take a year for me to recover from my injury,” he told Corriere dello Sport.

“It’s a Juve side that are growing, we have new players, especially in attack.

“Douglas Costa has just arrived, but he already knows his role on the pitch: you can see that he’s a champion.”

Marchisio then discussed Bonucci’s shock departure to Milan and backed young defender Daniele Rugani for a breakout year.

“Bonucci? They were quick negotiations and we respect Leo’s choice,” he added.

“Still, we have other good defenders: Rugani, who’s the youngest, has matured and must get even better.”
