“We have three games over the next week between Serie A and the Coppa Italia, so it’ll be an important few days for us,” said the Coach in his Press conference.
“Cagliari have immense potential in their squad. At times they’ve done very well, in others not so well. They have a poor defensive record, but against Milan last week they allowed hardly any chances. I think Massimo Rastelli has worked very hard on that aspect.”
Genoa signed two new players over the last few days and Cataldi, on loan from Lazio, should make his debut from the start.
“I like him, he’s young and he will start tomorrow, even if he doesn’t yet know our system well. It’s a choice I am forced to make due to the circumstances.
“At Lazio he was stuck on the bench and needs to play consistently. He’s a complete midfielder who can defend and attack with quality.”
Taarabt also arrived on an 18-month loan from Benfica, but he is not ready to feature.
“I fear he’s a long way off an acceptable level of fitness, so it’s not easy for me to introduce someone who has barely played for months. However, in training you can see the technical quality at his disposal. He has enormous talent.”
Miguel Veloso, Davide Biraschi and Mattia Perin are injured with Serge Gakpe at the Africa Cup of Nations.
“We conceded a few too many counter-attacks against Roma. Luca Rigoni is more of an attack-minded player. Lucas Ocampos and Nikola Ninkovic are inconsistent, but I think Ninkovic does better on the left, whereas he struggles to cover the space as a trequartista.
“Mauricio Pinilla with Giovanni Simeone is an option, as the Chilean is an atypical striker.”
