Italy will announce the details of Phase Two in the COVID-19 pandemic response, which should see training resume from May 4, in groups from May 18, so on track for games from May 27-June 2.

Today’s daily death toll of 260 is the lowest in the country since March 14, having reached a peak of 919 on March 27, as the lockdown measures have done their job to flatten the curve.

Hospitals and intensive care units are emptying out, which in turn allows those who are getting treatment to receive the best care rather than enter an overwhelmed system.

Testing has been ramped up, with 49,916 over the last 24 hours alone, 1,757,659 since the crisis began with the first positive case on February 20.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has announced a press conference for this evening, in which he will outline the details of Phase Two, which begins from the expiration of the last Government decree on May 4.

This is expected to include limited movement within their own region, some outdoor individual sporting activity, including training sessions.

However, there won’t be group sessions until May 18, so teams will need to work with staggered hours or in groups small enough to allow social distancing guidelines.

If all this goes to plan, Serie A will be on track to resume playing fixtures from May 27-June 2, with an end date for the season of mid-July.

The Champions League and Europa League are set to be organised solely in the month of August.
