Italy beat Austria thanks to goals from two substitutes, but the statistics at Euro 2020 show just how much the Azzurri made of their strength in depth.

They booked their spot in the quarter-final with a Round of 16 victory over Austria, sealed 2-1 in extra time with goals off the bench from Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina.

Italy are the only team to have used 25 of their 26-man squad in the competition so far, largely because of the revamped side fielded in the 1-0 group win over Wales.

Even second-choice goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu came on for a few minutes in that match.

It’s not just cameo appearances, though, as 22 Italy players have featured for at least 45 minutes at Euro 2020, again more than any other nation, followed by Belgium with 19.

The Italy substitutes played 712 minutes – admittedly, with a game that went to extra time – compared to 412 minutes from Belgium and 382 for Denmark.

Above all, they contributed immensely to their progress, as Italy substitutes had 17 attempts on goal, eight of them on target, compared to eight for Spain and Belgium, seven for Austria and just four shots from the Danes.

However, Austria remain top when it comes to actual goals from the substitutes, as three of their total five were scored off the bench, including the Sasa Kalajdzic header against Italy.

Belgium netted two out of seven goals with substitutes, Sweden out of four and Italy two out of nine (22.22 per cent).
