Italy need to perform in their final Euro 2024 qualifiers this month and may have to do without Genoa striker Mateo Retegui.

The 24-year-old striker impressed when called up by Roberto Mancini for the Azzurri back in March of this year, scoring in qualifiers against England and Malta. He made the jump to Serie A in the summer, arriving at Genoa from Boca Juniors in a deal worth around €15m.

Retegui has quickly managed to impress with Genoa since his arrival but was not able to join Italy for the September international break due to a knee issue. He returned to action, but was forced off the pitch in the 1-0 win over Salernitana on October 27.

As highlighted by Gianluca Di Marzio, Retegui’s knee issues have forced him to miss Genoa’s Coppa Italia clash with Reggiana and seems set to be sidelined for the upcoming Serie A match with Cagliari.

Should the 24-year-old also miss the game against Hellas Verona on November 17, he could be forced to withdraw from international duty, leaving Italy without the efficient goalscorer.
