Italy needed extra time to beat Austria 2-1 and qualify of the quarter finals of Euro 2020. Check out Football Italia’s player ratings.

Donnarumma 6.5 – Caught an Arnautovic cross before the break. That was the only time Austria kept him busy in the first half. The former Inter striker scared the Azzurri off later in the second half, but his goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR check. Great save on Gregoritsch in the extra time.

Di Lorenzo 5 – Tough night for the Napoli man. Lost the ball in a dangerous area at the very beginning of the game. Was booked in the second half for a foul on Baumgartner, resulting in a free kick that Alaba nearly converted. The new Real Madrid defender outjumped him to deliver the assist for Arnautovic’s goal, but a VAR check saved the Azzurri.

Bonucci 6.5 – Always composed and proved his usual ability to launch an attack from the back with long passes.

Acerbi 7.5 – He often advanced to support the attack and give the Azzurri an extra option in the final third. Hold off his marker and set it up for Pessina, who doubled Italy’s lead.

Spinazzola 8 – Had the first chance of the game, but his left-footed shot from inside the box was wide of the near post. The Azzurri were way more dangerous on the left wing than on the right. Involved in both Italy goals.

Verratti 6 – Mancini chose him over Locatelli and the PSG midfielder took just 15 minutes to justify Mancio’s choice. He was always in the right place to intercept the ball and provide quality passes in the final third. Struggled to cope with Austria’s pressing in the second half. (Locatelli 66 6.5 – Had a great impact, but his shot from the edge of the box was wide of the far post.)

Jorginho 7 – The usual consistent performance from the Chelsea playmaker. Often made the right choice, trying to find space where, apparently, there wasn’t.

Barella 6 – Arnautovic may have deserved a red card for a harsh tackle on the Inter midfielder after just one minute. Barella continued the game limping but still managed to create a couple of good opportunities for the Azzurri and forced Banchmann to the first significant save of the night. (Pessina 66 7 – Second goal of the tournament for the Atalanta man who collected an Acerbi pass, putting the ball inside the net from a tight angle.)

Berardi 4.5 – Dribbling past Alaba is not the easiest task in the world. In fact, the Sassuolo winger wasn’t too effective in 1 vs. 1 situations and hardly created goal-scoring opportunities for the Azzurri. (Chiesa 83 8 – The man of the night. His goal in the extra time paved the way for Italy’s win. The Juventus winger controlled a Spinazzola long pass with the head. Waited for Lainer to come across him, flicked it and then whacked in with the left boot from a tight angle. Was litterally on fire and created more opportunities thanks to his runs into open spaces.)

Immobile 5 – Bachmann wasn’t too happy when the Lazio striker crashed into him trying to reach a through ball. Immobile’s passes weren’t always spot-on, especially in the first half, but he kept Austria centre-backs busy. Almost put the Azzurri ahead, but his effort from 20 meters bounced off the outside of the far top corner of the woodwork. (Belotti 83 7 – Fought hard to keep the ball and ease Austria’s pressure.)

Insigne 6 – Had a shot saved and one charged down in the first half. He always gave the feeling to be dangerous but somehow often missed the final pass or the shot on target. Could have doubled the lead in the extra time, but Banchmann tipped his free-kick over the bar. (Cristante 108 N/A)
