Vincenzo Italiano warns Fiorentina must ‘perform even better’ against Atalanta than in their last two victories. ‘Those were matches where anything could’ve happened.’

It kicks off on Sunday at 11.30 GMT at the Stadio Franchi.

These sides already met only last month in the Coppa Italia quarter-final, Fiorentina fighting back for a dramatic stoppage-time winner despite going down to 10 men.

“Atalanta are one of the best sides in Serie A, so this will be a difficult match,” assured coach Italiano in his press conference.

“Our enthusiasm never waned, even when the results weren’t that good, and we hope to be more consistent from now on.”

Atalanta have no recognised strikers, so could use Jeremie Boga as a False 9.

“Boga, but also Ruslan Malinovskyi, know how to play and give defenders no reference points to work on. Atalanta are great above all because of the way they approach games tactically.

“The last two games against them were very balanced, decided by details, so we need to perform even better tomorrow. They were matches where anything could’ve happened, we’ll be made to sweat for a positive result.”

Goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano had become first choice, but he is out with tonsillitis, so Bartlomiej Dragowski returns for his first Serie A start since that serious thigh injury in October.

“He is a quality goalkeeper, the hierarchy can change at times, but not just because of the coach. If someone is out for three months and his replacement does well, it’s only right to confirm his status. I am sure Dragowski will be eager to prove himself tomorrow.”

Juventus coach Max Allegri said that Fiorentina could still break back into the race for a Champions League spot.

“I am pleased to hear that other teams are worried about us, especially as we have two games in hand. What we are doing is clear to everyone and we should be proud of that,” replied Italiano.

“I love the atmosphere in Florence, the passion of the fans, and my first role was to find an identity for this team.”
