The hosts can be fairly content to have dominated the game and kept a clean sheet, considering they were without Stefan Radu, Wallace, Luiz Felipe and rushed Bastos back after just one training session.

“We were only missing a goal, but the lads put in a great performance, were always very focused against Milan, the form team in Serie A right now,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“We allowed Milan nothing, not even a save for a corner, but the regrets are that we didn’t manage to score. At least if we were to draw at home, 0-0 was the best result.”

Krzysztof Piatek is the top scorer in the Coppa Italia and had found the net in every appearance for Milan, but was kept very quiet by Francesco Acerbi and co.

“Acerbi is doing great things, while Patric, Bastos and the two wing-backs also did well this evening. It was not easy to deal with the likes of Piatek, Suso, Calhanoglu and Borini, but we really neutralised them. They never got near to troubling Thomas Strakosha and we can now go to fight it out at San Siro in April.

“We hoped to score, but at least we’re starting to get players back now and they are working so hard. Bastos only had half a training session yesterday, we talked it over and he deserves credit for pushing through. Many in his condition would not have played.”

Considering the injury crisis, Inzaghi had been tempted to move to a 4-3-3 formation, but stuck with his 3-5-1-1.

“More than systems, I believe interpretation is important. Lazio were the most prolific side in Italy last season with this same system. We have the quality to score in every game, but for some reason, it’s just not going in at the moment.

“If Bastos had not recovered, I was going to use Lucas Leiva in the centre of defence, maybe go to four, but it matters little.”

Lazio now go into Saturday’s crucial Serie A Derby della Capitale with arch rivals Roma.

“We know that we’ve got less time to prepare than Roma, but we’ll try to prepare as best we can. I think with this tenacity and concentration, we’ll have a good derby.”
