The Aquile famously struggle to beat the big teams, but in recent weeks they have pushed past Roma and now Inter.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s header at the back post on a Luis Alberto cross 12 minutes in proved decisive, as if anything Samir Handanovic kept the scoreline down.

“We are in a good period of form, despite losing Stefan Radu and Patric to injury, the result did not change and the performance remained stable,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We showed character in a marvellous atmosphere like San Siro. Although we allowed a few crosses, the defenders and goalkeeper did well to keep everything under control.”

Lazio are now in joint fifth place with Atalanta, but are three points off Milan and have a game in hand to be played against Udinese on April 17.

“Regardless of the Udinese game, we have a series of matches coming up and must do well to recuperate from one to the next.

“I was angry after the Fiorentina game because we had played probably the best 45 minutes of my tenure and it was disappointing for the lads that we didn’t win. In December, we had found the right system, then missed some key players and that affected the balance, despite putting in some good performances.

“Now we’re getting players back, the quality increases and we’ve put in some interesting performances. We lost Correa to injury too in the first half today, as he’s in great shape and is a very intelligent player who reads situations quickly. He had a problem with his back that didn’t seem like much, but the pain was persistent and he asked to be substituted.

“Felipe Caicedo did very well off the bench and I’m just sad for him that he was up against Handanovic performing miracles, because we deserved a second goal.

“We mustn’t stop now. We have to keep going with this intensity and attitude. We knew with Ivan Perisic and Matteo Politano on the field that we’d be dealing with a lot of crosses, with Matias Vecino helping to fill the penalty area. Strakosha was courageous today and impressed me.”

Milinkovic-Savic scored the decisive goal, but is finally finding his feet after a dismal start to the season.

“He didn’t have the pre-season training with us because of the World Cup. I should’ve introduced him gradually, but because of other issues, we didn’t get the chance. He started strong, then had a muscular injury.

“The real regret is that we faced Sevilla in the Europa League without Milinkovic and Luis Alberto, as that would’ve been a different game.”
