Simone Inzaghi admits Lazio are ‘in the midst of a defensive emergency’ ahead of their Coppa Italia semi-final first leg against Milan.

Such is the extent of Lazio’s problems at the back that midfielder Lucas Leiva could be forced to play in central defence at the Olimpico on Tuesday evening.

“The team have worked well, we’re recovering from being knocked out by Sevilla, which burns us for how we played and how incidents developed,” Inzaghi told Lazio Style Channel.

“However, we’ve had four days to work well and that’s what matters most. Tomorrow we’ll have to make sure we’re ready.

“We’re in the midst of a defensive emergency and we’ll try to remedy it: we’ve tried changing things willingly and I’ve sought to understand who can adapt to certain roles.

“We’ll have to face the game with great humility, remembering it’s a tie that will develop over 180 minutes.

“Immobile and Piatek are two great strikers. Ciro has been here for three years and he’s doing great things.

“The Pole has started very well for Milan but apart from the clash between these two strikers, it’ll be a match between Lazio and Milan, which we have to try to address in the right way.

“At the end of this first leg I’ll be satisfied if I see my team have a great game. We can’t give more than very little away because we know the Rossoneri are deadly on the break.

“Therefore, we’ll have play by taking to the field in the best way.”
