Serie C midfielder and former Swansea City man Andrea Orlandi has been forced to retire due to heart problems.

A statement released by Orlandi’s club Virtus Entella read ‘a cardiac pathology’ flagged up in tests, forcing the Italo-Spaniard to end his career ‘with immediate effect’.

The 34-year-old [pictured, left] only joined Entella from Indian side Chennaiyin FC on deadline day last month but failed to play any games for the third-tier outfit.

Orlandi went on to make 278 appearances during his career, which saw him play for the likes of Swansea, Brighton and Hove Albion, Blackpool, APOEL Nicosia and Novara, as well as feature once in Barcelona’s first team.

It comes barely a year after Fiorentina captain Davide Astori died from cardiac arrest.
