“Milan had two very good games, but probably over the course of the two legs, we deserved to be in the Coppa Italia Final,” Inzaghi told Rai Sport.

“That is football, I compliment my lads and the only thing they did wrong was not being able to finalise any of the chances over two legs.

“I think we took the initiative for 120 minutes tonight and only failed to score a goal. Unfortunately, when you don’t find the net, you don’t go forward, but we leave this competition with our heads held high.

“My players were unfortunate to be facing a great goalkeeper like Gianluigi Donnarumma, who had a remarkable performance. We had 11 corners to two and should’ve flooded the opposition penalty area more.”

Lazio have precious little time to recover, as on Saturday they take on Scudetto chasers – and Coppa Italia Finalists – Juventus.

“Now we have to leave this competition behind us and think about Serie A. We would’ve liked a day or so more to recover, but must respect that the Bianconeri have a Champions League match coming up.

“I am proud to be at the head of a squad like this.”
