Simone Inzaghi is ‘very happy’ with Inter’s performance to fight back against Cremonese and admits he does not know if Milan Skriniar will still be with them after the January transfer deadline.

It was a rough start at the Stadio Giovanni Zini when after a series of corners, Inter found themselves behind to a stunning long-range David Okereke strike that looped into the top corner.

Lautaro Martinez managed to turn in the equaliser on the rebound from a parried Edin Dzeko shot, then completed the comeback with his deflected winner.

“I am very happy and I congratulated my team on a great performance, they took the best approach and unfortunately then conceded a worldie from their player that could’ve created problems for us after the defeat to Empoli, but instead we stayed calm and concentrated,” the coach told DAZN.

“It was tough against a Cremonese side that in the last few days had knocked Napoli out of the Coppa Italia and picked up a point in Bologna. I am very happy with the character shown by my team, as after a nasty defeat, conceding an early goal against the run of play could’ve been really damaging.”

After the final whistle, Inzaghi urged Francesco Acerbi to donate his jersey to a young boy who was sitting near the dugout.

“There was a kid who was cheering us on throughout the game and I thought he deserved some reward. There were many fans here, just as there were to celebrate with us on Monday after the Supercoppa when unfortunately we were unable to reward them with a victory.

“We are Inter, we know that the pressure is on us to deliver results and try not to concede goals like this. I can only imagine the questions if we had lost to that goal!

“We realised there would be difficulties here and Cremonese were fired up. If I had to find a negative, we made a few too many mistakes in our passing that could’ve allowed us to extend our lead before the end.”

Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez are combining so well at the moment, and indeed last season, that it is difficult to see how Romelu Lukaku and Joaquin Correa can try to win back their places in the side.

“They are in good shape, but Lukaku and Correa had injuries and are getting back slowly. They played 20 minutes tonight and that will help improve their fitness levels.”

Inter needed the boost after a surprise defeat to Empoli and ahead of Tuesday’s tricky Coppa Italia quarter-final against on-form Atalanta, which will then be followed by the Serie A Derby della Madonnina with rivals Milan.

“Let us not forget that before Sunday there is a Coppa Italia quarter-final against Atalanta, so our thoughts are on that. Then we have a few days to prepare for Milan and hope to get more players back from injury and suspension so we have more options.”

Milan Skriniar was suspended today, but does Inzaghi believe that the defender will stay with him for the rest of the season or leave early for Paris Saint-Germain?

“That is not a question for me, it is for directors Marotta and Ausilio. I said before that Milan is a great professional, he is here at the moment and trains to his best. I cannot waste time imagining what happens in the future.”
