The Nerazzurri flew from one extreme to the other, beating rivals Milan 3-0 to lift the Supercoppa Italiana in Riyadh and then losing at home in Serie A to Empoli with a Milan Skriniar red card.

On top of that, Skriniar’s agent confirmed he would not sign a new contract and was free to discuss a move in the summer.

Inzaghi was asked about some of his choices in this evening’s game, for example picking Roberto Gagliardini rather than Kristjan Asllani to stand in for the suspended Nicolò Barella.

“Brozovic had quite a bad injury to his calf after the World Cup and he should return over the next few days to full training,” the coach told DAZN.

“Gagliardini is reliable in that midfield role and has always done his best when called upon. We have to take it one game at a time.”

Robin Gosens was expected to step in too, but instead Federico Dimarco is again confirmed, with Denzel Dumfries getting his first start of 2023.

Lukaku is again on the bench and still seems a shadow of the player that Inter sold to Chelsea only 18 months ago.

“He’s still getting there, otherwise he would’ve already started a few games. The lad is eager, he never stopped working and today can help us during the match.”
