Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi said it was a ‘magical evening’ at the Olimpico after securing top four and most likely ending the 13-year long wait for a place in the Champions League group stage.

The Aquile beat Cagliari 2-1 in Rome tonight and the coach was over the moon after securing a place among the top four in Italy, most likely securing a place in the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2007-08.

“It was a magical and important evening,” Inzaghi told DAZN. “After 13 years it’s something unimaginable but we had confidence.

“To be honest, despite the disadvantage, I was calm today. I had players on the bench who could change the match.”

Inzaghi underlined sporting director Igli Tare’s importance at Lazio and indirectly touched on the upcoming transfer market to help improve the squad.

“We must improve, I’m lucky to have Tare as sporting director and he knows what he’s doing. He has been working well in these years.

“We have an excellent relationship and I have great faith in him.”

Looking forward to next season, Inzaghi hopes to have a big squad to fulfil the demands in a tight programme.

“Next season we will play like this, from October we will play every three days and therefore we must have a big squad.

“But I’m sure we will be ready.”

Ciro Immobile scored his 31st goal in Serie A 2019-20 and Inzaghi stressed that the Aquile are doing their utmost to hand him the Capocannoniere title.

“We want him to win the Golden Boot, it won’t be easy, but we will try to complete it, also because Luis Alberto is the first on the list for assists.

“We had been waiting for this fir years, we needed the numbers and we hit them tonight.”

The only if, would be that Napoli win the Champions League and Roma win the Europa League. Then Lazio will need top three to play in the elite competition next year.
