Chris Smalling has been the focus of much transfer market noise in recent months but the English defender is reportedly edging closer to signing a new contract with Roma.

The 33-year-old joined the Rossoneri from Manchester United in August 2019, initially arriving on loan before making a permanent move the following year for around €15m.

Since his arrival, Smalling has proven himself a reliable and intelligent centre back, becoming a regular feature of Jose Mourinho’s squad in the Italian capital.

As detailed by Calciomercato.com, Smalling wants to sign a new contract with Roma, keen to commit another two years of his future to the club.

The defender’s current contract expires at the end of this season and the Giallorossi have the option to extend it for a further year, but the Englishman wants a little more stability and is asking for a two-year deal.

Both parties are keen to continue their relationship and will now negotiate over the details of a new contract. Roma do not want to pay Smalling the current €3.5m net per season he earns in the Italian capital and could reach an agreement to lower his wages to €2.5m net, with some add-ons included.

The next international break in March could provide the perfect time for the two parties to agree a deal, long before the summer transfer window.
